Super Bowl XLVIII - February 2: Road Safety Alert!

As far back as 2003, a study of U.S. collision data performed by University of Toronto researchers uncovered a 41% increase in motor vehicle collisions in the hours following the Super Bowl. The study compared data from 27 Super Bowl Sundays with that of the Sundays preceding and following the big game from 1975 to 2001. The first hour immediately following the Super Bowl was the worst, with the collision rate jumping 70%. There was a 10% drop in the collision rate during the game itself, presumably because far fewer people were on the road on that time.

Funding for PPS implementation in Brazil

The Proactive Partnership Strategy is one of the most successful community-driven processes for addressing road safety, and the recent pledge of 75,000 USD from the Pan-American Health Organisation, financially supported by the Ministry of Health, underlines the value of the strategy to the Brazil. The funding provided will support the ongoing development PPS in 3 of 5 state capitals. Each state is located in a different region of Brazil.

In a quiet room in São José dos Campos' central city hospital, a 28-year-old patient recuperates from a broken leg. A few days earlier, a drunken motorbike driver struck him as he was working with a roadway repair crew.

"Safety measures are there, but they need to be increased," the patient says, adding that he'd like to see more video speed control on the roadways, as well as digital signs that warn drivers of workers and tougher enforcement against drunk drivers.

Ultimately, he said, road safety will be achieved when people change their attitudes.

GRSP partner cities in Brazil win high recognition for road safety excellence

Two Brazilian cities engaged in GRSP's Proactive Partnership Strategy have won the prestigious Volvo Road Safety Award - the reward given as a high recognition of excellence for professionals and communities in Brazil for effective road safety practices. Winners of the 18th Volvo Road Safety Awards were announced in September.

Porto Alegre, capital of the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul, was the winner in the "cities" category. Since 2008 Porto Alegre has been implementing road safety programmes using a proactive partnership approach supported by GRSP.

Annual Meeting In Brazil Highlights Results of Proactive Partnership

More than 100 people from around the world came to Rio de Janeiro as part of activities surrounding GRSP’s annual general meeting in June. The venue was the Challenge Bibendum, the biggest international event in the automobile industry, of which GRSP was a leading road-safety participant.
